What is an aspect ratio?
Aspect ratio is width divided by height, often written as a ratio like 4:5. For example, 4:5 has a numeric value of 0.8 (4/5).
What are Instagram's accepted aspect ratio ranges?
| Aspect ratio range | Numeric values | |
|---|---|---|
| Images | Between 4:5 and 1.91:1 | Between 0.8 and 1.91 |
| Stories | 9:16 (suggested) | 0.56 |
| Reels | 9:16 (recommended). Can accept 0.01:1 to 10:1, but 9:16 avoids cropping or blank spaces | 0.56 |
Notes:
- 3:4 images are not supported via the API used for automated publishing (despite being supported natively).
- If outside the accepted range, the post is scheduled as a notification instead of being auto-published.
How are aspect ratios calculated?
Divide width by height:
- 1200 × 1200 → 1.00
- 1200 × 1500 → 0.80
- 1200 × 629 → ≈ 1.907
Instagram is strict about exact values. For example, 1200 × 628 → 1.910828, which is out of range for images.
What sizes do my images and videos need to be?
Any size works as long as the ratio is within the accepted range. Examples:
Square
- 600 × 600, 800 × 800, 1200 × 1200
Portrait
For images, ratio must be between 0.8 and 0.99:
- 800 × 1000 (0.8)
- 1200 × 1500 (0.8)
- 1500 × 1800 (0.84)
Landscape
For images, ratio must be 1.01–1.91; for videos, 1.01–1.78:
- 800 × 600 (1.33)
- 1200 × 800 (1.5)
- 1500 × 1200 (1.25)
Notes:
- Max image file size is 8MB. Larger images may be converted (e.g., to 1920px wide).
- Minimum dimensions: 150 × 150. Smaller images are upscaled to the minimum.
How will images be displayed?
Instagram is testing a taller format for grid display (e.g., 3:4) but their API still requires 4:5 for upload. Composer previews may display 1:1, while the post preview shows the final 4:5 display.
CAUTION
Important: Videos must be at least 3 seconds long and no longer than 60 seconds for feed posts. Longer videos will be automatically trimmed.
